The Work of Elders & Deacons

Part 1

1 Timothy 3:1-14

In the third chapter of the letter, Paul considers matters that are practical to the proper functioning of a local church: the work of elders and deacons. In this lesson, we will consider the work of elders.

God intends local churches to be governed by an eldership. Appointing elders was an essential part of Paul’s work, as he helped establish local churches. In all likelihood, Timothy could remember when Paul and Barnabas appointed elders in all the churches throughout Asia Minor (Acts 14:21-23). If a church does not have an eldership, that church is lacking what God intends (Titus 1:5). Therefore, teaching and training concerning the eldership is needed among churches.

The church at Ephesus had an eldership. In the first three years of their existence, Paul had labored with them. He made a methodical effort towards establishing and training the elders (Acts 20:31). Yet, Paul was deeply concerned for them. In his farewell address to the elders, he warned about internal and external threats to the church (Acts 20:29-30). This section of the letter serves two purposes: 1. Remind the present eldership about their character and work. 2. Give a template for appointing new elders.

About Elders

1) Elder: an overseer; superintendent; shepherd.

2) This position is for a man. This and other traits disqualify a woman from serving in this capacity. Given the fact this is a position of leadership, Paul’s writings in the second chapter would disqualify a woman from serving in this leadership capacity.

3) Desire: A man must desire this office. He must be properly motivated for this work. Instead of desiring this work, some have coveted this work.

4) When to appoint an elder: When a qualified man desires the office.

5) Good work: The work of an elder is filled with great responsibility. Elders will be held accountable before God for their shepherding of the church. However, their work is good in the eyes of God. They tend the church for which Christ lovingly shed His blood (Acts 20:28).
