Paul & Timothy
Introduction- Part 1
READ: Acts 16:1-5
The relationship between Paul and Timothy has been well documented. Early in Paul’s ministry, he took an interest in younger Christians. He must have known the future of the Church was in the youth.
Paul and Silas had recently begun a preaching trip. They traveled to Syria and Cilicia strengthening the churches. The road they traveled connected Ephesus to Sardis, Antioch in Pisidia to Iconium, and Lystra to Derbe. The road then went through the Cilician Gates, to Tarsus, and to Antioch in Syria. Paul met a young Christian named Timothy while he was working in the towns of Lsytra, Derbe and Iconium.
Timothy came from a family divided by faith. His mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois were Jewish. They had obeyed the Gospel. Yet, Timothy’s father is only described as being a Greek. This could mean that Timothy’s father was an unbeliever, deceased, or both. Regardless, Timothy had been taught the Gospel by his mother and grandmother.
Timothy was young when Paul met him; yet, he was a reputable Christian. With the conviction of faith and the energy of youth, Paul invited Timothy to join him and Silas in their travels. This invitation is striking. Paul did not travel with just anyone. He and Barnabas had parted ways over a dispute regarding Barnabas’ nephew, Mark. Due to past bad experiences, Paul refused to travel with Mark. As young and inexperienced as he was, something about Timothy impressed Paul. In time, Paul’s feelings towards Timothy would be proven right. Timothy became a reliable help in the work of the Gospel.
