The Aim of Our Charge is Love

1 Timothy 1:5

The affection Paul had for Timothy is without question. They were bound together by a common faith in Jesus Christ, our hope. Paul wanted nothing but the best for Timothy: grace, mercy, and peace. Yet, Paul knew better than most that Timothy’s work was not easy.

In the opening lines of this letter, Paul begins to address the problems Timothy was facing regarding false teachers. Contending with false teachers was not always an academic exercise. As had happened in Ephesus, false teachers became physically violent. Yet, Paul reminds Timothy of the singular motivating influence of their work: love.

The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 1 Timothy 1:5

The theme of this letter is debated. Some think it is about the work of an evangelist. Others think it is about the dangers of false teachers. Both subjects are considered at length. However, underlying all the instructions Paul gives Timothy regarding his work in Ephesus is love. No matter what actions we take as Christians, love is to be the reason. Love is the defining trait of Christians and the most effective tool we have in guarding the sacred trust.
