Honor, Experience, and Purity
1 Timothy 5:1-2
To this point in the letter, Paul has mainly considered subjects regarding Timothy’s public work as an evangelist. He needed to teach against false doctrine. He needed to appoint elders and deacons. Equally important to these more public aspects of his work were private aspects. Timothy’s personal interactions among Christians within the congregation were important.
In this section, Paul writes about how Timothy was to treat different members of the congregation. Churches are often comprised of diverse people. How Timothy interacted with each one would contribute to either the harmony or dysfunction of the church.
