Corrupt Desire
1 Timothy 6:3-11
Once again, Paul warns against false teaching. There was a specific character and approach common among false teachers. Paul gives a profile of false teachers. Notice the following traits of false teachers:
• Arrogant
• Unhealthy craving for controversy
• Argue endlessly over words
• Produce envy, dissension, slander, and suspicion
• Motivated by money
Timothy was to withdraw from such men. Nothing profitable would come from endlessly engaging men like this. Similarly, Paul told Titus to reject divisive Christians after two attempts to correct them (Titus 3:9-11). Unlike Paul and Timothy, the aim of false teachers was not love (1 Tim. 1:5).
False teaching stands in stark contrast to sound doctrine. Both produce vastly different results. Sound doctrine is teaching which is wholesome. The sound words of Jesus Christ are intended to produce a change of heart. A change of heart will produce a change of life. As Christians, our lives are to reflect the image of God. Godliness is satisfying and fulfilling. Godliness brings contentment.
The false teachers had wrong desires. They wanted to be rich. They were covetous. Their unreasonable and vicious behavior could be attributed to this corrosive desire to be rich. They loved money more than they loved God.
